Provincial Day of Action On Litter Blog Post by Mayor David Mayberry

Yesterday (May 11) was the Provincial Day of Action on litter. I took the opportunity to spend about an hour picking up litter along Sweaburg Road for half of a km east of my home. In that short distance and time I picked up 264 items that filled two garbage bags. When I got home I dumped the collection on a tarp in my garage and then "sorted" the material. The results were interesting. The number one item (70) was plastic drinking bottles (water and pop) with the number two item being coffee cups and lids from a national chain of donut stores (41).
I also "sorted" by recyclable and non recyclable as well. I was surprise ( and dissappointed) that 85% of the items I picked up should have been in the blue box instead of along the road.
I have to wonder if there was room in the vehicle for a full cup of coffee, bottle of water or can of pop, why when they were empty were they so irresponsibly disposed of since they could have and should have been taken home and recycled.
I understand that some littering is accidental, but for the most part people choose to throw things along the road, that it is a choice, and not a good one.
I thank the province for initating this "day of action", it was enlighting!
