To the people of South-West Oxford:
For most of us, we are heading into a Christmas Season like no other. The confusion and the frustration of the Covid pandemic will have a major impact on how we can and will celebrate this wonderful season. A reminder from Southwestern Public Health that the safest holiday gathering is only with those you live with and although the holidays are usually a time of the year when many families travel, this year we must avoid non-essential travel and stay at home as much as possible.
The requirements to limit inside social gatherings, even for our extended families, to only ten (10) in an Orange Tier and five (5) in a Red Tier (including physical distancing and wearing face coverings while interacting with those outside your immediate household) will prevent those of us with a number of children and grandchildren from being “all together” at the same time/place this year. I personally will miss the great family fun we look forward to as we catch up with the cousins, aunts and uncles of our extended family. But for the health of the community and the people we love, we must.
Having said that, our province is allowing those who may live alone the opportunity to join other family gatherings (maximum 10 people in Orange and 5 people in Red) to celebrate with another family this Christmas. We all know of single seniors (and those who haven’t yet attained that status) that might enjoy and greatly appreciate being invited into our homes to celebrate. Our Medical Officer of Health supports this opportunity as it offers some much-needed joy at a most difficult time. I would encourage all of us to consider inviting someone who may be alone this Christmas to join your celebration, but please remember the necessity to physical distance, wear a face covering and wash and sanitize your hands and high touch surfaces often. We have done well protecting those around us, and we will get through this pandemic in good shape if we take care of ourselves and each other.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for the New Year!
