Twice last week at committee meetings I commented on how pleased I was with the public's response to COVID-19 and the requirement for us to wear masks. I realize there are those who have concerns about the benefit, necessity and potential negative effects they have heard or read about, but in SWOX the vast majority of people are willing to comply. It is this willingness to wear the mask, even though we have very low rates of Covid in our community, that I think needs to be acknowledged. Lets be clear, virtually no one is wearing a mask because they really want to. They are often uncomfortable and bothersome, they muffle your speech and your ability to clearly hear others, but they help reduce the spread of the virus!
I'm very proud of the community's acceptance of this necessary and temporary impediment because not only does it reduce the potential spread of Covid, but equally important it clearly states in a very public way that we understand that as individuals and communities, that we care enough about each other and their health that we are prepared for this inconvenience. Wearing a mask is not about self preservation, but rather taking care of those around you. It is this obvious gesture of community respect and concern that I find myself celebrating. We care enough to go the extra mile for each other, we love and respect our neighbours enough to accept the inconvenience of the masks to make sure they are safer. That is where community begins, when we see the needs of the other as being worthy of our best actions. We choose, by our actions, the community we live in. If we want great communities, we have to live that way.
Well done to all! Please remember to physical distance, wash your hands, stay home if you are feeling ill and wear your mask.
