Message from Mayor David Mayberry - Thursday, August 6th, 2020

Recently the Medical Officer of Health for the Southwestern Public Health Unit has issued a “Letter of Instruction” for our region. Simply, this now means that when entering any publically accessible enclosed space, building or facility, people must wear a face mask that effectively covers their nose and mouth to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. This decision by Dr Lock, the Medical Officer of Health, was not made lightly, but rather after considering expert advice from epidemiologists and other Public Health professionals.  While there are some who are not pleased with this decision, it is now reality – you must wear a face mask in those situations.

I fully realize that very few people like to wear these masks (including myself) but they are the right thing to do at this time to reduce the spread and curtail the opportunity for a second wave. There are those that can, and will, be exempted from the requirement for masking for personal health reasons (or age for the very young). I also understand that face masking does not protect the wearer’s personal health, but rather protects the community from any potential infection you might have and could be spreading. This is not about your personal protection, it is about protecting our community which each of us has a role and responsibility to do.

Face masking in not required outdoors IF you practice physical distancing (stay 2 meters apart) so I strongly encourage you to get outside and enjoy our beautiful summer weather by walking, riding your bike or strolling one of the trails in our area.

Please remember to sanitize your hands often, practice physical distancing and stay home if you are feeling unwell. Like it or not, we are all in this together, so let’s take care of ourselves and each other.
